Scared Silent Conference in NYC

I am so glad to see this conference taking place at Columbia University. Junco was the keynote speaker at the conference I attended in Mexico City last year and he is a powerful speaker. Reporter Dudley Althaus was amazing, too. He's really in the trenches. As well, I have read a couple of LA Times reporter Sam Quinones' books.
This theme of coverage that "gets beyond the body count" is one I stress in my ethics course... I feel a research topic coming on...

TJ's story mentioned in The Huffington Post

This is a great piece in The Huffington Post on why so many youthful offenders are convicted of serious crimes. The lead lawyer in TJ's case wrote it.

AEJMC panels show interest in ethnic media

I'm off to AEJMC on Monday. This will be my first time attending the conference and I was thrilled to see several panels about the ethnic media, including one on the Latino press. I can't say whether previous conventions have had as much focus on the ethnic media and minority media ownership, but given the limited body of research in this area, my hunch is that the attention is emerging.

I'm overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of panels, workshops and research presentations so directly relevant to my research and my teaching. It's going to be a fabulous opportunity to learn so much and I intend to use every minute of it.

What's your favorite online survey tool?

I'm beginning some research using an online sruvey tool to query journalists. Does anyone have tips or tricks to share to increase response rate? A favorite tool (Survey Monkey... or...?) I would appreciate any guidance and/or warnings.

Feedback: the gift that keeps on giving

Wow, I just found out that my blood-sweat-and-tears research paper has been accepted for presentation at AEJMC this summer. I'm thrilled. Three reviewers read and rate each paper and are allowed to give narrative feedback, as well. Only one of my reviewers gave me such feedback. It was constructive, helpful criticism and I learned from it. It will help me write stronger methodology explanations in the future.
What's baffling me is that all three reviewers rated me stronger or weaker in different categories so I'm not sure how to improve. I think AEJMC should require all reviewers to write at least a short narrative with each review. I wrote long narratives on each paper I rated.
This is also making me think about how frequently professors work alone, without feedback from our peers, and how much more I could learn if I had that type of feedback. Hopefully, that's what I will find at the conference.
